[THE ART OF] Une pin-up DAREDEVIL YELLOW pour Rafael GRAMPA

Warren SIMONS, Daredevil editor and good friend, invited me to do this DAREDEVIL pin-up, for the special edition of DAREDEVIL # 500. I love the character and choose the yellow suit to make my homage. Matt Murdock is a boxer’s son and because of that my DAREDEVIL is almost a mix of super hero, boxer and wrestler fighter. I always thought that the radar graphics for the character could be more organic and fluid that the “electronic” graphics that I usually see.

I had a lot of fun!

A l'occasion du numéro #500 de sa série DAREDEVIL, Marvel, et plus précisément Warren SIMONS, éditeur de la série, a invité plusieurs artistes afin de réaliser des pin-up du justicier aveugle pour fêter dignement cet anniversaire. C'est ainsi que l'excellent artiste brésilien Rafael GRAMPA a dessiné ce DAREDEVIL YELLOW dans un style novateur et hyper-efficace.

From the attached pin-up, you can see why this is DAREDEVIL as only Rafael GRAMPA could envision him.

From the exposed neck—I mean, his costume does not really fit him—to his Billy clubs, which look like they were assembled at a kitchen table in a Hell’s Kitchen walkup, this is the costume of a very violent man who built an outfit from goods seemingly harvested at a sporting goods store. The thing I love about this piece is that this version of DD appears to come from our New York City, far from a world where spandex and unstable molecules exist. This is a super hero outfit built from boxing gear, one created to tackle the grit and strange violence of Hell’s Kitchen. Also note Rafael’s fantastic take on DD’s radar sense. These aren’t clean, concentric circles filling the night sky from a hero blessed with extraordinary gifts. These are strange, uneven lines, something primal, like an animal’s sense of smell. Rafael’s work here is terrific—this is one of my favorite pin-ups—so if you dig it, check out the issue, and check out Grampá’s other fantastic work.”

[GRAPHICS] Le gothique selon Roberto de la TORRE

Roberto de la TORRE est arrivé en 2009 sur la série Marvel DAREDEVIL pour le numéro # 501. Aussitôt, il a réussi à imposer son style et à parfaitement retranscrire l'atmosphère sombre et l'univers gothique du justicier aveugle d'Hell's Kitchen. Ses planches font ainsi la part belle aux décors, qui deviennent un personnage à part entière et permettent de conférer à la série son ambiance particulière.

Une image récurrente pour le héros DAREDEVIL

A l'instar de Bill SIENKIEWICZ, l'artiste privilégie ainsi un encrage lourd, qui renforce le sentiment d'oppression. Aussi, cette scène qui ouvre l'épisode est particulièrement parlante: DAREDEVIL est accroupi sur une gargouille, symbole maître du gothique, tandis que l'église s'impose de toute sa hauteur derrière lui. Le ciel est noir d'encre, et il pleut des cordes. Une avalanche de traits et de points envahit les planches, et posent une ambiance idéale pour débuter cette nouvelle intrigue imaginée par Andy DIGGLE.
